Good cooperation, an open mind, mutual confidence and curiosity
Technological and genetic developments in all types of farming have been tremendous over the last decades. These developments have resulted in more animals handled per man and per unit area, and have increased productivity, making all types of farming more intensified and larger scaled.
Due to these developments farmers are forced to produce more efficiently and a higher quality levels, primarly through better management. As a consequence, farm managers require support in their management strategies in order to survive in an economically and economically viable way.
Farming nowadays has a very complex structure. All the management functions and their processes are inexorably related and dependent on each other.
For this reason veterinarians and advisors like me providing Herd Health management, must not only pay attention to reproduction, but also to other operational management functions and their processes. And last but not least attention to the farmer, his family and employees.
Allocation of the limited resources of the farmer must always consider a balance of all distinct and interrelated processes. In addition, I must have an understanding of how performance in one process is biologically or technically connected to other processes.
Using my broad experience in the animal production chain I am looking first in good cooperation with the farmer and his workers to the strong points, afterwards what has to be improved. A simple SWOT analysis will motivate the farmer and his workers .
Motivation, with requirements as an open mind, mutual confidence, prepared to change old roles, curious and questioning is the basic of succes. More structure in his daily/weekly activities will be the first step to improve management in general .
The benefits of overall of the Herd Health Management services should exceed the costs, although specific proof of this relationship in many circumstances will be very difficult.
